Wash day, LOC method

Every wash day

You will need

  • A small amount of aloe vera gel
  • 1 drop of black castor oil
  • A small amount of shea butter

Steps

  1. L (liquid): on washed, still-damp hair, after conditioner, apply a little aloe vera gel, section by section.
  2. O (oil): warm 1 drop of black castor oil between your palms and smooth it over the lengths.
  3. C (cream): finish with a little shea butter on the ends. At night, sleep in a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase.

Why it works

  1. 01

    Lengths that dry out fast

On very curly hair, sebum struggles to travel down: the scalp can be oily while the lengths are dry.

  2. 02

    A leave-in step

The American Academy of Dermatology suggests a leave-in or an oil after conditioner for curly hair.

  3. 03

    Less friction at night

A satin or silk bonnet or pillowcase and loose styles limit friction and frizz, according to the same academy.

More about Curls & coils

The curlier the hair, the harder it is for sebum to travel from the scalp to the ends. Very curly hair is also harder to comb and more fragile when handled. In Mauritius, summer humidity changes how frizz feels.

For curly hair, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests a leave-in or an oil after conditioner, and a satin bonnet or pillowcase at night. The LOC method (liquid, oil, cream) follows the same logic. It is common practice: no study has evaluated it.

Wavy or fine hair: gel and a few drops of oil are enough. Coily, thick hair: a little more butter on the ends. Detangle on wet hair, in sections.

Frequently asked questions

LOC or LCO method?

LOC: liquid, oil, then cream. LCO: liquid, cream, then oil. No study compares them, and the link often made with porosity has not been shown. Try both and keep the order that works for you.

Won't the butter weigh my curls down?

Adjust to your hair. On fine hair, a very small amount, on the ends only. In the lab, butters make combing harder: keep them for the last step, on the ends.

How do I detangle coily hair?

On wet hair, in small sections, with a wide-tooth comb. Coily hair is easier to comb wet, straight to wavy hair rather dry.

Coily hair: how to use the LOC (or LCO) method

Liquid, oil, cream: the LOC method is hugely popular for coily hair. It is common practice, not a scientifically validated method. Here is how to do it simply and adapt it to your hair.
