Benefits

  • Helps protect dry skin from drying out
  • Softens dry or thick lengths and ends
  • For very dry areas: elbows, heels, hands and lips
  • Melts between your fingers, at around body temperature
  • A base for homemade balms, melted with a LAMA oil

How to use

Warm a fingertip-sized amount between your fingers, then apply it to clean skin, ideally while still slightly damp. For hair, smooth a little over the lengths and ends, or mix it into your conditioner. On fine hair, use very little, on the ends only.

Precautions

  • Patch test on the inside of your elbow before first use.
  • Shea comes from a nut: if you have a tree nut allergy, ask your doctor first.
  • It softens or melts in the heat: store it somewhere cool, out of the sun.
  • Use a clean spatula and close the jar tightly.
  • It does not replace sunscreen.

Frequently asked questions

Why has my shea butter melted?

It melts at around body temperature. In a Mauritian summer it can soften or turn liquid in the jar, especially in the sun. Keep it somewhere cool and it will firm up.

Can I use it if I have a tree nut allergy?

Shea comes from a nut. Shea allergy is rare, but possible. Ask your doctor first, then do a patch test on the inside of your elbow.

Does shea butter weigh hair down?

It is a rich butter, so it depends on how much you use. Warm a little between your palms and apply it to the lengths and ends. On fine hair, keep it to the ends.
