The recommended ritual

Before and after washing

Leave on
20 to 30 minutes' resting time
How often
On wash days, as needed

You will need

  • Avocado oil, for the oil bath
  • 1 drop of black castor oil, or 1 to 2 drops of avocado oil, for the ends

Steps

  1. Before washing, on dry, detangled hair, apply the avocado oil to your lengths and ends. Leave on for 20 to 30 minutes.
  2. Wash: shampoo your scalp, letting the lather run down the lengths, then condition.
  3. On still-damp hair, warm the finishing oil between your palms and smooth it onto the ends. Detangle with a wide-tooth comb.

Why it works

  1. 01

    Detangling and shine

On hair swatches in the lab, oils reduced wet combing force and increased shine. Butters made combing harder.

  2. 02

    A thin film, renewed

A thick film of oil weighs hair down and looks greasy. Better a little oil, renewed at each wash, especially on fine hair.

  3. 03

    Split ends get trimmed

No source shows that an oil can mend a split end. Conditioner and regular trims keep damaged ends in check.

More about Lengths & ends

Washing, drying, friction, sun: the hair's surface gradually loses its lipids, and lengths get more knots and frizz. Bleached or coloured hair is also more porous.

In the lab, on hair swatches, oils made wet combing easier, increased shine and limited the formation of new split ends. These tests used other oils than ours: we take the gesture from them, not a promise.

The gesture: an oil bath before washing, then a few drops on the ends while still damp. Fine hair: very little, on the ends only. And a regular trim removes damaged ends.

Frequently asked questions

Which oil for dry ends?

Thick or curly hair: one drop of thick black castor oil on the ends. Fine to normal hair: 2 to 4 drops of lighter grape seed oil. Avocado oil suits a pre-wash oil bath.

Is castor oil suitable for very long hair?

In a very small amount, on detangled hair, without rubbing. A rare case of long hair matting into a mass after a very viscous oil such as castor has been published. If your hair tangles abnormally, do not force it and seek advice.

Should I warm the oil?

Lukewarm, never hot. The American Academy of Dermatology advises people with fragile hair against hot oil sessions. Check the temperature on the inside of your wrist.
